AI Policy
As of 12/2/2023, Amazon’s policy on publishing AI-generated and AI-assisted books was as follows:
We require you to inform us of AI-generated content (text, images, or translations) when you publish a new book or make edits to and republish an existing book through KDP. AI-generated images include cover and interior images and artwork. You are not required to disclose AI-assisted content. We distinguish between AI-generated and AI-assisted content as follows:
AI-generated: We define AI-generated content as text, images, or translations created by an AI-based tool. If you used an AI-based tool to create the actual content (whether text, images, or translations), it is considered “AI-generated,” even if you applied substantial edits afterwards.
AI-assisted: If you created the content yourself, and used AI-based tools to edit, refine, error-check, or otherwise improve that content (whether text or images), then it is considered “AI-assisted” and not “AI-generated.” Similarly, if you used an AI-based tool to brainstorm and generate ideas, but ultimately created the text or images yourself, this is also considered “AI-assisted” and not “AI-generated.” It is not necessary to inform us of the use of such tools or processes.
As Amazon is one of our primary distributors, The Electric Scroll is somewhat bound to Amazon’s definitions and policies. We also do not want readers choosing to purchase – or not purchase – our books based on whether the readers perceive that a human or a machine wrote or produced the book.
With this in mind, The Electric Scroll’s AI policy is as follows:
- For works being published by The Electric Scroll, we are happy to accept AI-assisted works that otherwise meet our standards. We will not accept AI-generated works. We will not use AI-generated covers on our books.
- Pre-made covers listed at The Electric Scroll have been created by a human being, by hand, from stock images. No AI was used in the creation of our pre-made covers.
- Our custom covers will also be created by a human being, by hand, from stock images. Our cover artists will use no AI in the creation of covers.
- For formatting and editing clients, we are happy to accept both AI-assisted and AI-generated works, because every book, regardless of its origin, needs a good editor and formatter. All editing and formatting is done by human beings. The AI/non-AI origin of the book is between its author, the readers, and Amazon, and does not impact the work we do to make it better.
The good news is that Scott graduated in December of 2023.
The bad news is that due to life changes and challenges, we have decided not to resume production of the monthly newsletter.
